There’s no denying it, I’m a HUGE pregnancy nerd.

Eight years ago, when I decided that I was ready to have kids, I truly meant: I. was. ready.

I took the decision seriously. I weighed the pros and cons, I imagined what life could be like if I didn’t have kids, I prepared myself for the potential that my body could be changed for life, and I ultimately determined that I wanted to become pregnant. Now I know that people who get pregnant come to the pregnant part of their lives in so many different ways and I’m not saying other ways of arriving here are in any way wrong, I’m just describing what my path had been like, up to this point.

It didn't take long on my new path before I realized that even though I knew tons of general things about making a baby and having a baby, I didn’t actually know much about pregnancy and birth at all.

Good thing I love RESEARCH :)

Now, I’m sure you’ve heard people talk about getting weird food cravings in pregnancy, right? Well, when I got pregnant I didn’t crave fettuccini alfredo or pickles and ice cream; I craved reading absolutely everything I could find about labour. Why labour specifically? Because everything I had ever heard about it made me totally and completely TERRIFIED at the prospect of going through it. But I also knew that something about that feeling didn’t make sense… how could it be true that the human body was seemingly so “bad” at having babies? Wouldn’t the human race have died out if we were so unsuccessful at regularly having babies without a bunch of assistance? And yet, here we are, still filling the earth with humans.

So, I had to know, what is the real story here? How does birthing a baby really work? How is it supposed to work? What can we do to help support and facilitate the process? Do we even have any control on the process? On the outcomes? Why are we so afraid of it and why are so many birthing people traumatized by their experiences?

And you know what? I found a lot of answers (about way more than just labour!) and I want nothing more than to share them with you.
